Durham Cathedral

About

Durham Cathedral, built between 1093 and 1133, is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in England. It houses the shrine of St Cuthbert and the tomb of the Venerable Bede. Perched dramatically above the River Wear, it was designed partly as a fortress alongside Durham Castle. Its innovative ribbed vaulting influenced Gothic architecture across Europe. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, it also featured as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films, drawing visitors worldwide.

Project Workflow

1.

Client Requirement

  • Durham Cathedral needed to modernise its technology infrastructure to support an improved visitor experience, without compromising the building's historic fabric.

  • Legacy cabling and connectivity were insufficient to support new digital visitor services, ticketing systems, and interactive exhibits.

  • As a Grade I listed building and UNESCO World Heritage Site, any infrastructure work required strict sensitivity to conservation and heritage constraints.

  • Facilities and IT teams needed a partner capable of navigating complex site access, working hours, and installation methods unique to a working cathedral.

  • Reliable, high-performance connectivity was essential to support both visitor-facing technology and behind-the-scenes operational systems.

2.
